Setting up Windows 95/98 Dialup Networking


Install Dial-Up Networking (If Not Already Installed)
1. Click START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. On the Windows Setup tab, click Communications, and then click Details.
4. Click the Dial-Up Networking check box to select it, and then click OK.
5. Click OK
6. Follow the instructions on the screen. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.

Install TCP/IP (If Not Already Installed)
1. Click START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-Click the "Network" Icon.
3. Click ADD| Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft. In the Network Protocols box, click the TCP/IP then click OK.
5. Click OK, you may be prompted for your Windows disk.
6. Verify the TCP/IP Properties.
7. IP ADDRESS - Set to obtain Automatically
8. WINS CONFIGURATION - Select "Use DHCP" at the bottom.
9. GATEWAY - Remove any entries, i.e. 123.456.789.0
10. DNS CONFIGURATION - Click on "Disable DNS"
11. Click OK
12. Click OK and you will see Windows making some changes and you will be prompted to restart your computer, do so now.

Create a Connection:
Create a New Dialer
1. Double-click "My Computer"
2. Double-click "Dial-Up Network"
3. Double-click "Make New Connection"
4. Name it "ACSinc.NET"
5. Click "Next"
6. Put in the Area Code and Phone Number for your city. National Dialup numbers | Local dialup Numbers
7. Click "Next"
8. Click "Finish"

Adjust the Dialer Properties
1. When the Dialer that you just created appears in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder, position your cursor over it and press the right mouse button and select "Properties" from the menu.
2. Uncheck the "Use Country Code and Area Code" box.
3. For the Server Configuration tab, UNCHECK all the boxes except under "Allowed Protocols" you need to leave TCP/IP checked.
4. Click OK and the Dialer is ready to use.

Set the default connector.
1. Click START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-Click the "Internet" icon.
3. On the "Connection" tab, select the ACS dialer.
4. On the "Programs" tab, make sure that Outlook Express is selected as the mail program and the newsreader program.

After the Restart
You are now ready to connect. Go to My Computer, then Dial-up Networking, and double-click the icon that you created. Enter your Login Name and Password in lowercase, check the box to save the password, and Click Connect.
